Magellan Triton 2000
Magellan's Triton 2000 is the upper-echelon model in its new handheld GPS device series, and the 2000 really does have everything you could possibly want in a GPS device that still fits comfortably into your pocket.

For starters, there's the 2-7/10-inch color screen that gives you an ample view of the interface, maps, and compass feature that are a part of all the devices in the line. The 2000 also features a built-in barometer that keeps you on top of any weather changes if you're out on the trail for an extended period of time. Meanwhile, the touchscreen display makes it easy to move from one menu to another instead of having to just use a keypad.

The Magellan Triton 2000 is a sat-nav device designed for use in the great outdoors, and is suited to activities such as hiking, skiing and water sports. The device feels reassuringly rugged and fits in the hand well. Encased in a rubber and hard plastic shell, it's designed to withstand water submersion. On the front of the device is a 2.7-inch colour touchscreen display, which makes the map interface and menu navigation easy. A small and fiddly stylus is provided, although using a ?nger or the sturdy buttons below may be preferable.

Although it lockes on to satellites easily enough when in the countryside, it may take longer in built-up areas. The device comes pre-loaded with a base map – but it's not possible to gain directions from this. Users sticking with the base map can use the Triton to ?nd their location, where traditional paper OS maps can be used alongside.

The unit is at its best when you buy a range of additional maps, however. Frequent skiers can add maps that include resorts, trails and lodges, and sea lovers will benefit from nautical maps that display tide and depth information for different parts of the world. You can also add regular OS maps. With the option to follow preset walking routes or create and store your own, there are a few neat features on the Triton.

There's an integrated microphone and speaker for recording messages that can then be associated with waypoints on your map. The speaker allows this GPS device to be used as an MP3 player, so you won't need to haul your iPod out on the trail as well.

Moving beyond these features, Magellan also incorporated a 2-megapixel digital camera into this GPS device. It's not going to take the place of a high-end digital camera (for example, there's no flash), but if you want to get some quick and easy nature shots to show your friends what to find at the trail's end, it's an interesting convergence option. The 2000 even has an LED flashlight built in to help you find your way home in the dark.

The entire device is waterproof and water submersible, so even if you drop it into a stream, it should continue to work fine. There's an SD card slot for uploading more maps and MP3 files, so you can expand on the North American basemap that comes preloaded on the device.

This GPS device weighs eight ounces, so it will not go unnoticed in your pocket, but it's still fairly easy to port around. It's powered by two AA batteries that provide an average of 10 hours of battery life--just using the GPS receiver--so you'll want to bring along some spares.

There's no denying the appeal of the Magellan Triton 2000, and its go-anywhere capabilities will be a draw for outdoor types. If you've got to have the best of the best in terms of a handheld device, the Magellan Triton 2000 has it all.
